2016 & 2017 Mull Activity Reviews from Back Brae Lodge Guests
2016
“My husband is a fan of single malts
so we’re gradually working our way around distilleries in Scotland, and he really enjoyed the whisky, particularly the Ledaig.”
“Wildlife seen - a Sea Eagle, otter,
Golden Eagle, short-eared owls and even a stray osprey - but the highlight was five dolphins that swam into the Bay and gave us all a display - priceless!”
“Recommended activities:
Circular walk to lighthouse – great. Used info from book. Loved Aros Park – walked to far end of woodland track and had our picnic. Salen – walked on forest track above the loch and then to castle. Saw seals basking but no otters. Enjoyed Glengorm Castle and walks around here. Lovely tearoom. Really loved the Cheese Farm. Well worth a visit and food in the cafe super. Piglets and calves were a delight too. Drove to Dervaig, stopping at eagle hide above Loch Tor and also at the settlement about 3 miles east of Calgary. Tearoom and gallery good in Calgary, so too all the wood sculptures.”
“Superb meals to be had at the Mishnish,
but we gave Cafe Fish a miss as they only want cash (Cafe Cash?).”
“We ate at Mishmash, and MacGochans twice
and the food and ambience were amazing. We tried the Indian and Chinese takeaways after some long walks, both excellent, however the best food we had was from the Tobermory Bakery which was excellent, great and far too tempting cakes, and fab sandwiches/bread for lunches when walking. We spent too much at the Chocolate Shop, again excellent produce, and to be honest there were so many other great places to relieve yourself of cash, though great local crafts and produce. We spent a great day walking on Iona, on a low key slightly rainy day we walked the Aros Park route from Tobermory and we were lucky enough to see otters in the bay. We saw seals at Calgary, again another chance excursion on a rainy day, and we saw some eagles on a walk just up behind Tobermory, all in all very lucky in terms of spotting wildlife.”

“The food in the pub and fish cafe was great.”
“This is our second visit to Tobermory
and we have fallen in love with the place. We’ve visited Calgary Beach and took the clifftop walk with fantastic views. Langamull Beach a long walk down but lovely and secluded with plenty of rock pools, and cows! Our walks also included Dun Ara with the standing stones and bathing pool (didn’t have a swim) - lovely with great views. Glengorm Castle coffee shop a must. Fishnish and Garmony walk with a look in the new wildlife hide but afraid no sightings of any otters. But the best part of our trip has to be our day out to see the puffins and Fingal’s Cave - Lunga absolutely fantastic. Well worth sea sickness, cold, wind and rain sat on top of the boat, but the sun did come out and made the day perfect. We will be back next year to find the otter and visit the south side of the island.”
“We found Tobermory to be a beautiful place
even though at times the weather may not have been kind to us.”
“Walking down the garden steps immediately into Tobermory front
with its shops, bars and restaurants was fantastic. Make sure to visit Duart Castle for a delicious afternoon tea, Calgary Bay for a walk along the beach and Mull Theatre if there are any performances on!”
“We have been blessed with glorious weather
and been out and about Mull from after breakfast until very late evening. Fabulous week. We spent a great time watching sea eagles at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse while having our picnic. Ironically, everywhere we went we saw people on boats, in car parks, all with binoculars seeking out the ‘elusive’ eagle, and we had two bicker over their lunch in front of us while we were eating ours!”
“We were really blessed with great weather,
it may have rained during two nights, but the days were bright and sunny.”
“Did two walks from your folder,
both stunning.”
“Tobermory is a fantastic place.
We also had a quick trip to Calgary Beach which was very cool.”
“We enjoyed trips to Iona and Calgary Bay
and also called in to see our relatives at Salen (who know you, they said to say hello!). We even had a sighting of the Tobermory Cat!”
